"Most folks are about as happy as theymake up their minds to be." Abraham Lincoln
Positive thinking is a mental attitude that admits into the mind thoughts, words and images that are conductive to growth, expansion and success. It is a mental attitude that expects good and favorable results. All of our feelings, beliefs and knowledge are based on our internal thoughts. The way you think, day in day out, affects all aspects of your life. Learning to listen to your "internal dialogue" will help you recognize your thought patterns and how they may be affecting the way you handle the stressful situations of daily living. Many people have found that, when they tune in to their internal dialogue, much of it is negative. Thoughts like, "I could never do that" and "What if I fail?" can seriously impact the way you behave. This, in turn, affects every aspect of your life. When we are stressed, the body produces certain hormones. When released infrequently, these hormones are harmless but, when produced continuously, they can cause serious damage. Cardiovascular disease is caused in part by the continuous production of stress hormones.
How does one develop negative attitude?
Each one of us might have a different reason to develop negative attitude. Some of the common reasons to develop negative attitude are:
1. Complaining: it is worse than doing nothing. Each time one complains, it becomes increasingly difficult to climb out of the ditch they’ve created. To loosen the grip of this vicious habit, we need to become aware of our complaining, stop it in its tracks, and immediately look for something positive to say. It’s just a matter of replacing a bad habit with a good one.
2. Blaming: We won’t find solutions to any problem by looking for someone or something to blame. you have to work at appreciating what you have instead of moaning about what you lack.
3. Expectations from others: Some people wish that the world should behave according to their whims. This is demanding too much from others. Whenever people and the world fail to act according to their selfish wishes, they are unhappy. Such a poisonous attitude prevents them from growing and learning how to cope with life's challenges.
4. Negative self-talk: Everything negative we say about ourselves to ourselves (self-talk) and to others is a suggestion. We are unwittingly practicing self-hypnosis, programming ourselves for failure, and creating self-fulfilling prophecies.
If the negative attitude is not changed, then it may have adverse effects on both mental and physical health of an individual. How can you change your negative attitude to positive attitude? Given below are some of the simple tips:
Develop positive thinking by trying these:
1. Self- Indoctrination: Take charge of your mind through positive self-affirmations e.g.: “ I take charge of being happy unconditionally from now on”. We all aspire for something because we know that we have the power to fulfill it. Each person is capable of programming his own mind to achieve what he desires. Incase, you are not able to achieve your dreams/ wishes, still continue to love yourself and accept the way you are.
2.Learn to communicate: When frustrated we talk certain things which may have negative impact later on. That needs to be avoided. Learn to communicate things assertively.
3. Allow yourself to be loved: As human beings we all like to be loved and accepted. Learn to accept compliments gracefully. Others will not compliment you if really do not deserve it. They might have seen certain abilities in you, which you have failed to identify for yourself.
4. Handling criticisms: Never let criticisms demoralize you. You should never judge your abilities based on others reactions. Pay attention to constructive feedback, which helps you in improving yourself.
5. Take shelter under humor and laughter: Humor helps in releasing tension and will assist you in viewing the situation on a lighter side/note.
6. Let go off emotional baggage: Whenever there is a failure, all of us have the tendency to get emotional and feel upset. This can be controlled if we try to leave the emotions behind. We need to view the situation without much emotions attached to it. This will help in leaving the emotional baggage behind and to move on.
7. Positive self-affirmation: Listen to your internal dialogue. If the internal dialogue is negative, e.g.: “ I cannot accomplish what I want by the end of the year”. You need to consciously put an effort to change that to a positive statement e.g.: “ I will try to accomplish whatever best I can by the end of the year”. Try replacing all the negative statements that you have about yourself.
8. Write down strong positive affirmation statements about yourself and be committed to read those statements everyday.
Positive attitude manifests in the following ways:
Constructive thinking.
Expecting success.
Optimism.
Motivation to accomplish your goals.
Being inspired.
Choosing happiness.
Not giving up.
Looking at failure and problems as blessings in disguise.
Believing in yourself and in your abilities.
Displaying self-esteem and confidence.
Looking for solutions.
Seeing opportunities.
Always expect the best. Then if you have to hurdle a few tough problems, you will have generated the strength and courage to do so. George Matthew Adams
